Jessica Mak promotes Malaysia Sign Language (BIM) workshop in Penang

The blogger asked Jessica Mak to write her story something about the workshop.

Jessica write her story here;

The Pusat Majudiri Y of YMCA Penang organised Malaysian Sign Language (BIM) Awareness Workshop which held on Saturday, 22nd July 2017. The workshop aims to deepen the understanding of BIM in social communication and education. Ms Jessica Mak, President of Malaysian Sign Language and Deaf Studies Association (MyBIM) was invited to conduct the 6-hours workshop for the parents of deaf child, educators of deaf school, sign language students/volunteers and deaf individuals. The topics were presented included Deaf culture, sign language and linguistics of BIM. Without sign language there is no culture. It will help the participants know what the appropriate terminology to refer the people. Term of "normal" to refer non-deaf people is not appropriate because deaf people are normal like others. The participants learnt the definition of sign language and identity the difference between them and other system like Manually Coded Malay or known best as Kod Tangan Bahasa Malaysia (KTBM) which is not a language. Not only that, they also learnt BIM history, literature and how to use BIM in education. The most interesting part was to learn the old BIM signs which already vanished in early 1980s like Malaysia, toilet, colour, etc.

She brief her introduction to them.

The participate are happy because they learned a lot of things from her knowledge.
