Amni Salma is first time to join the Deaf World!!!

On the occasion of the event, I met Amni Salma through our event. I am interested to know about her different way of education. I am curious about how she can handle her training speech without the special school. She would like to share her speech with me here. She was born with bilateral mixed hearing loss severe to profound Deaf but she has successful her speech as well until now.

When she was 5 years old at the kindergarten, her teacher has noticed that she is unable to pay attention to her voice. Her teacher has suggested it to her parent for checking hearing tests and getting hearing aids too. After that, her parents have decided to sent her to the mainstream school, Bandar Baru Bangi so they have trained her kid's speech every day. Since they have to attend speech therapy sessions for 2 to 3 times then her mother teaches her at home all the time since then.

Sometimes she has difficulty with her consonant sounds when she trained her voice. But she keeps practising her speech while she pays attention to her speech reading beside her mother for correcting her pronunciation sounds.

In the mainstream of primary and secondary school, she always sits at the first row of the table every year. She was still struggling to catch up on the lesson and only get 1A in SPM. However due to her diligent way of study skills she manages to further her Degree and Master level study with Dean's List achievements.

What is the most difficult speech?

She learns her oral speech and has challenged her auditory class with hearing people. Her hearing is unclear with word sounds and difficult to catches full sentences. She can only get half part of the conversation and she needs to guess their story.

With the hearing people, she experiences a lot of difficulties catching the conversation if she stays in the noisy background. For example the sound of a car, an air condition, a kitchen and so on. She needs to use her listening skill to filter those noise backgrounds with people voices.

After that, she never gave up to get a better hearing. She tries to find the highest technology for hearing aids or cochlear implants. First, she wants to get a cochlear implant but after done many tests it is not approved because part of her cochlear is still can function a little bit. Then she wants to apply to get a bone bridge implant but it is also not approved because she does not have an ossicles ear bone to put the implant. So she has no choice to fully depending on both Ultra Power Hearing Aids to maximize volume.

Therefore, she keeps continuing on her journey life as a career woman. Eventually, her officemates and close friend always support and help to correct her listening and pronounce sounds too. She is not alone anymore and feels lucky in her situation.

Did she attend her Malaysian Sign Language for learning something in the Deaf world?

Yes, she did learn sign language since primary school on weekends and keep brushing her knowledge in signing. She enjoys hanging out with Deaf friends too but sometimes she is having a hard time catching up with their full stories if they are too excited with their fast sign in Malaysian Sign Language. So she is happy that she can mingle in both societies with hearing people and Deaf friends in the world.

She asked me to take our selfies once time.

"Save 999 Deaf" app for the hearing impaired

Benny wanted to share this my first experience about saving the kitten through the special app for the Deaf. My side hearing colleague has heard the voice 2 days ago in the deep draining. He wants to save the kitten from the draining but he could not open the cage of the drain because it has blocked and locked up already! He asked me what to do! Do we save ourselves or call anyone to help something!

I told him that we call Bomba for rescuing the kitten because Bomba is responsible to save animals and victims too. But he is not sure about saving the animal too. I said YES!! They are responsible for saving the kitten because they have experience and training in this dangerous place.

My side colleague took the picture and sent it to me for how look it is.

In Malaysia, They have designed a special application in Android and Apple that they need to call an emergency. But we have to register OKU and more detailed information because the centre caller will be collecting the information.

How do I report the Bomba

I have drawn the point of the picture. I used the Trapped scene and have proof of the picture for sending them. They will be referring to this picture.
In addition, I have written the description and need additional tools for explaining them as well as they can do.

After 30 minutes, they arrived at the scene place and are rescuing the kitten in the drain.

Wah!! The Bomba car is so bigger and a lot of tools everything included the water tank too. So HONOR them as well ! !

The Bomba has saved the kitten. Congratulations to their team!

Thus, hearing people is not usually call Bomba for rescuing the cat because they don't dare to call it and are embarrassed. In a cause that, the Bomba brought the biggest car for saving the kitten.

It is better than nothing. If we don't save the kitten and left the kitten in the drain. It will be worse because the kitten can be decomposed and spread the virus. The Covid-19 will be made a new specimen from the kitten's bacteria and virus too. It will infect our real humans from the drain. Unfortunately, we don't have medicine for Covid-19 so are not able to save people's life cost.

As important, we have to see an animal when they have trapped somewhere. We must call Bomba for rescuing them as well as safe. We must be fighting Covid-19 and care to clean the air environment too.

Take care of yourself and be learn how to use the app for calling an emergency. This one is not playing and very serious for calling an emergency. Please note it. Thank you so much for reading your time.

Deaf Malaysian teacher's day - Amril Nurman Lokman

Amril Nurman Lokman is a role model of his teacher and grew up in Cued Speech Centre Deaf school at Kampung Pandan. He is pro-found Deaf in hearing level. His family is all hearing expected him and has taught him how to train his speech therapy for many years.

At his first experience, he was small and wear his hearing aids. He felt annoying, brink and headache. Then he took his hearings aid from his ear and threw his hearing aids outside. After 1 week, he has adapted his hearing in the sound environment and comfortable with his sounds. From now, he learns a lot of sounds and different sound tones from here to there. It made me a good experience and always feeling amazing.

Afterwards, his family brought him to a speech therapy centre for training and updating the sound environment and voices in his hearing aids. They exercise to listen while speaking words every day. I thanked his parents, his speech therapists and his teachers too for how they are very effortless. Eventually that, he feels much better than he didn’t hear at all from the pro-found Deaf level.

Now he is teaching his pupil at the primary school. He has a lot of patients and thinks about how to teach a pattern of ways and adapt his style of teaching. He is quite improved and even more closed his pupil because he has experienced through his knowledge of Deaf Education in Malaysia. He wanted to share his experience working video at Malaysia News through TV1 channel.

Ben's Deaf dance inspiration

When were you interested to dance?
When I was 6 or 7 years old and have participated in the line dance for the Deaf performance at the Cued Speech national of the private school at Kampung Pandan. There are a lot of events for a dance performance.
My school, they wanted us to show them that we can dance when we can hear a music dance. The hearing teacher and dancer taught me how to dance such as a western, India, Malay and Chinese dance too. Some Deaf dancers were unable to listen to music because they are different from their level of sounds.

Thus I am falling love to dance Para-Para Sakura music because I even watched the dance movie by Aaron Kwok. I dance to the Para-Para Sakura song to 4 times for showing the performance and the dancer helped me count beat by hand sign. I can memorize Para-Para Sakura because I have practised it very well.

Some were nervous because they cannot hear the sound of music. I asked them to follow my step when dancing. Eventually, they were doing well when they followed my step dancing. Their parents were surprised by my talent and that I could hear a music dance. They didn’t expect that I can hear music while dancing.

On 2007/08, I have applied to the exchange student to the USA for 6 months when I was 17 years old. I went to the Deaf and Blind Colorado Springs school. Colorado Spring is the capital of Denver,USA. I went independently without my parent from Malaysia, learnt how to live and learnt that there are different people and culture in the USA.
There was a porm night event from my high school. I was curious about what it is a porm night because I never do it in Malaysia. I explored the western partner dance. But I am very nerd and don’t know how to dance because I have only learnt for 1 hour before the event started.

7 years later, at 25 years old, my hearing friend, Patience Chen brought me to dance class. She encourages me to dance because she knew that I can listen and speak as well. I am just a weak hearing people. At the first time, I felt a bit awkward and didn’t know how to dance. It was very difficult for me to lead and communicate with girl partners. Then I stopped and gave up because it was very difficult for me and scare me. Another year I went back to the social dance class and met some friends.

After 4 years, I have practised and learned the techniques of dances from the traditional Swing and Shim Sham and pick new Coast West Swing, Balboa and Blue. I am able to communicate with the dancers. After that, I am curious and learn Batacha dance but it is a short time.

In conclusion that, the Deaf International even dance who is hard of hearing that they love to dance like me such as Nylon DiMarco, Marlee Martlin, and another too. That’s what I would like to perform my dance to show them in the community.

Left picture took it in the USA (2007/08)
Right picture took it in Malaysia (2019)

Why did I like the dance with a partner?

It makes me be meditation. Also, I learn different talent dancers for learning and tricks. I can meet new friends from International and Local dancers and also learn to speak English in my improvement.

The doctor and the consultant from the hearing aids shop has advised me to must be active and listen to a sound every day. Thus, I can be practice to speak and proactive to listen to my ears since I had trained it by my parenting and aunty. It takes me a long time and catches a different tone of sounds.

I have learned the workshop such as 2 days only and just dance with social entrainment. I am a bit embarrassed to dance a girl partner. So I am trying to open-minded and open heart to follow my dance styles. I felt loved to dance with partners because it was so fun and more communication in the body language dancing. Some hearing people are impatient and notice my wrong methods of dancing. I should be accepted and learn from the mistake of improving.

Did you even communicate with a hearing partner dance after the dance social?

Yes, I did to chat some partner. But they look awkward and dont know how to chat with me. I am trying to chat them as well so that they can understand me. It keeps doing well to us that they are curious and know why I can hear music. They had known Deaf matter that they cannot hear music but I did it as well. So they are a bit surprised and saw my dance performance at the stage. I am sharing with them how I can hear music then they know who I am.

Which do you like two partners or line dance group?

As comparing the line dance and two partners, they are different in the total. The line dance is always the same methods. We should be the same body language of dance and followed to the music only.

The two partners are really creative, unique and feeling our hearts in music. I have picked the two partners because it is more thinking and leader. I am interested to learn how to listen to music while dancing and also learn to lead the girl dancing. It gives me to learn different people’s skill dance from international and local of Malaysia.

That’s all I am a pleasure to share my story with all of you here. Thank you for your reading time.
